Agence le Prince Noir is a fully registered, insured and independent French estate agency with an office located in the small but lively town of Chaillac. Being conveniently situated on the borders of the Limousin, Centre and Poitou Charentes regions, we cover the departments of the Indre and the Haute Vienne, and also stretch over to the eastern borders of the Vienne.
Recently, property hunters have woken up to the potential of Central France but in the past the area has been a little “off the beaten track” and so there are still some bargains to be had here. Why Le Prince Noir we hear you cry? – Well, the locals know just what we're talking about, but as you're probably not local here's a short explanation as to how we came by our name.
Back in 1337 a young man named John Chandos, already well known for his great bravery in battle, became counsel to Prince Edward, the future ‘Black Prince' (Prince Noir) of England. He was charged with the training of the Prince's army and was to lead them into many battles. At one such battle, after a planned surprise attack on the Abbey at St Savin in the Vienne, (that back fired when they lost their way in the night), he was mortally wounded by ‘Le Pont' on the river Vienne at Lussac-les-Châteaux, where we had our original office.
The tomb of John Chandos can still be found today, situated in Le Pont just down the road from that first office, and the English connection here in Lussac, as well as all over the region that we cover, is firmly fixed in history. This whole area is right on the borders of what used to be France and England in the Middle Ages and so we usually reassure our French neighbours that our name is not in fact a declaration of war, but an affirmation of the long history that the British have with this region !
The Poitou-Charentes is one of the sunniest parts of the French western coast and its mild climate makes it desirable to visit anytime. The scene is one of serenity, with vast horizons and wooded valleys, the soothing tranquillity of canals and the valley of the Vienne. It is the second most prominent region of France in terms of historic monuments and is renowned for its wealth of Romanesque art. Located less than half an hour from our office is Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe which houses a Romanesque abbey first erected in the 9th century and adorned with the finest and most complete series of murals painted in France. Retracing 31 scenes from the Bible, the beige and pink-toned paintings that decorate the nave are now on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
